Despite Rafael's last injury - recurrence of the adductor problem has now been witnessed four times as the last year ended. But the kind of performance he has shown, takes the audience back to the time when He wore singlet and pirate pants.

Can this be the beginning of the return of Rafa Nadal to the top 5 of the ATP?

Rafael has shown an amazing transformation. Since 2014, when he won the French Open Title, never again could beat a top 10 player in a Grand Slam. The way he pulverised in successive round to Gaël Monfils and Raonic during this week, it sets a global expectation for him to deal quickly with Grigor Dimitrov in semi-final which will be held on Friday.

Nadal set the tone at the sixth point only when he made Raonic face a 140mph body serve. Nadal was bold enough to stand steady just a foot or two behind the baseline and yet was able to serve out of the way and slam a forehand winner up the line. A brilliant way to begin his return.

Nadal learnt from his narrow loss only three weeks ago in Brisbane and came up with few tactical clues.

He was concerned about the problems had in Brisbane, where he was receiving around seven meters behind the baseline. His coach Toni and Carlos Moya worked together with Rafa to sort out this problem.

As a result, Nadal was able to regularly pass fizzing shots across the net and Raonic. Also, his swinging leftie serve has been superb throughout the match.

After this amazing victory, everyone including Nadal himself is quite hopeful for the matches yet to come especially because the remaining three players in the tournament, all of them are right-handed with single-handed backhands, and Nadal enjoys nothing more than this style being practised against him in the court.
